Texas Sugar Industry Prospects and State Farms

The Battalion reports Texas sugar farming shows underdeveloped capital interest. Texas produced 27 million pounds last year, with Brazos Colorado and Rio Grande valleys capable of a million tons annually. Cunningham sugar estate at Sugarland yielded 8 million pounds from 54 thousand tons of cane, led by Col E H Cunningham, and its net crop value nears $300,000 with a refinery planned. Other state sugar farms on the Brazos and Brazoria counties, and Ellis estate, largely run by state convicts, have paid well, yet capital remains reluctant to expand production despite cheap land and clear opportunities.
