Doomed Valley Flood Ravages Pocahontas Coal Fields
Bluefield West Virginia June 24 An immense flood from torrential rain and a fierce electric storm swept valleys in the Pocahontas coal region. Elkhorn Creek surged washing Keystone and surrounding mines and towns while rail lines and bridges were destroyed leaving communication cut off. Officials estimate property losses over 2 million dollars with many deaths likely, including Keystone residents and workers across the Norfolk and Western network.
