In Scranton Pennsylvania on Sunday Ernest Schmiel and Jenny Brannan of Greenwood, lovers thwarted by a rival, killed Schmiel and injured Brannan after drinking poison and a gunfight in the woods. Schmiel died. Brannan survived with poor prospects of recovery per doctors.
In Salisbury Maryland Elmer Heath killed his fiancée Miss Katie Atkins then shot himself. Both youths under twenty one had planned marriage previously called off last week. Heath survived and was taken to jail to avert crowd violence.
Death report states Mrs. Cora Saucers died from a cause other than appendicitis. The notice notes the illness was not the reason for death and cites medical examination details.
In Passaic New Jersey coroner Scholer’s telegrams blocked interment of Mrs. Cora Snyder a music teacher. The funeral proceeded as planned with the casket kept in a vault due to grave water while autopsy results were awaited.
Six men died and many were injured when a house storing 3000 pounds of dynamite exploded near Cambridge Ohio at the Senecaville mines. The blast wrecked the shaft and scattered bodies within 700 feet, injuring a score of workers and wrecking the building.
The Picket, a horse never before first, won the American Derby before about 70,000 fans. He completed one and a half miles in 2:33, breaking all records and edging Claude by lengths. The race drew enormous betting, said to be the largest ever for a single event in America. Nineteen horses started, with $32,275 gross value noted in reports.
In Pomeroy Washington Amanda De Lartigue admits killing her husband on September 23, 1902, with an axe and burying him in the farm yard. She says De Lartigue threatened her life and shot at her in the yard before she struck him. She notes she was twenty years older than him.
Major J. B Pond long known for lecturing and singing died at his Jersey City home following an operation on June 17 that included amputation of his right leg. The death was reported from New York on June 22.
Daniel Judson Holden of Curtis Bros. law firm is dead. He was a member of leading clubs and an official of several large southwestern development companies.
In Manila on June 22 authorities revive charges that American officers took part in looting after Manila fell in 1898. Investigations focus on museum art objects given to a Filipino caretaker and a claim that a former staff officer stole a silver service from Malacanang Palace. Governor Taft has returned from Benguet. his health is reported restored.
Miss Kate Murray twenty of Colorado City Texas fatally jumped from a suburban street car in El Paso on June 22 after an accident caused sparks from electric wires. Panic aboard the speeding trolley led to her plunge and fatal neck injury.
In Austin on June 22 a plot to derail a Houston and Texas Central passenger train on the Llano branch four miles from the city failed. Several hundred rocks were placed on the track, but the plan did not succeed.
A severe electrical storm battered Travis County including Austin on June 22. The storm destroyed much corn and blew out a fifth story window in the state house.
Tamaqua Pennsylvania June 22 fourteen men were badly burned by a gas explosion in No 4 mine with Daniel Lewis dead and six others in critical condition Two English speaking miners and three foreigners are in critical condition investigators blame a defective safety lamp The blast is described as severe and tragic with uncertain outcomes for the injured.
New Rochelle police sweep the Italian quarter searching every house for the murderer of Special Policeman Ahern, killed early Saturday morning by a man believed to be a burglar. The full search yielded no arrests.
Curtis Jett and Thomas White of Jackson Kentucky spent a quiet Sunday in Lexington jail. They were not allowed visitors and religious services were canceled due to crowds. The men were provided a pint of whisky and meals sent from a restaurant.
An extra North Shore railroad train jumped the track one mile south of Point Reyes. One coach overturned, Michael Kirk of San Francisco died. Chief Court Justice Otto, Dr. Wickman of San Rafael, and Conductor Burns among the injured.
In Canadian Texas J H Jornegon was killed near town and J L Cole, Ris stepson, was shot through heart and head. In Wilmington Delaware on June 22 two attempts to lynch George White, accused of assaulting and killing Rev Bishop’s seventeen year old daughter, were reported.
In Cleveland on June 22 Senator Hanna said he is not and will not be a candidate for vice president and would decline any nomination if offered.
