In Rome on July 23 thousands from all walks of life filed through St. Peter's Basilica to view Leo XIII's body laid in state. The ceremony drew a vast crowd as guards kept order and ambulances stood ready while the pontiff's bier was surrounded by candles and kneeling clergy.
The dispatch notes rising revolutionary activity in Macedonia and Turkish troop troubles affecting officials in Constantinople. Separately, Elks lodges in Baltimore held a crab feast at Rochester Beach on July 23.
In Austin on July 23 unions refuse to permit members who are also militia to take the oath of allegiance under the Dick bill. Militias forced to resign from unions. several militia members quit to avoid expulsion. Also reports of a stolen girl found, railroad express complaints heard, and county tax rolls showing decreased assessed property values.
In Rome on July 23 a solemn pontifical requiem mass for Leo XIII drew about seven thousand mourners in St Peter's. The vast church, with capacity for 70,000, appeared sparsely filled as many stood. Cardinal Oreglia, exhausted yet presiding, faced new arrivals Cardinal Scampa and Cardinal Boschi as the conclave preparations begin.
In Fort Worth on July 23, Isaac Ford, jailed on charges of criminally assaulting a seven year old in Sherman, hanged himself with a blanket rope tied to cell bars. He prepared the improvised noose overnight and killed himself by stepping from a bucket as guards watched.
A Gulf and Inter State passenger train that left Galveston on September 8, 1900 arrived in Beaumont after a 1040 day delay caused by the storm. The train stood on a track now connected to Beaumont and many local residents saved themselves by refugees aboard during the event.
A subcommittee of coal miners and operators agreed on the Cherokee district scale covering Crawford and Cherokee counties in Kansas and Vernon and Bates counties in Missouri. The district will pay 72 cents per ton for the coming year with a 12% cents increase for entry yardage and day work. An agreement also sets 7 cents for Indian Territory mine run coal.
The Mysterious sea convention of Sisters was presided over by National Grand Princess Clara E. Scull of Galveston Texas. In the afternoon a joint meeting occurred with National Grand Master Gaines delivering a welcome address and National Grand Princess Scull replying.
In Hood canal near the Olympia mountains Seattle on July 23 Mrs Ella Smith of Homahoma and Mrs Rena Bradford of Seattle drowned while attempting to rescue two young daughters. The mother and Mrs Bradford plunged into the water to save the drowning children in a heroic but fatal effort.
Curtis Jett and Thomas White indicted for the Jackson murder were quietly removed from Fayette county jail at 6 45 am after an order from Harrison circuit court. They boarded the 6 50 Louisville and Nashville train to Cynthiana to face trial before Judge Osborne on July 27. Sheriff Leach and a deputy escorted them. jail staff were unaware. Troop mobilization planned earlier was sidestepped to prevent unrest. Both men remained calm.
More than 800 African American delegates attended the formal opening of the fourteenth triennial convention of the United Brothers of Friendship and Sisters of the Mysterious Ten at St. Louis on July 23, gathering men and women for the national grand lodge event.
