Strike Situation Quiet Start as New York Cars Resume
In New York on July 20 the strike began quietly with most streetcar lines starting on schedule. Second Avenue, site of a recent disturbance, was emptied while police guarded with crews sleeping in the barns. Early trips proceeded without major incidents as more cars ran by midmorning, though motormen preferred escort to the suburbs. Wires bore tin cans and banners including effigies of Rossiter and anti-combination placards.
