Rome July 15 Pope Leo XIII shows brief improves and declines amid delirium and weakness. He rises briefly to confer with four cardinals gathered in his sick room as doctors acknowledge uncertainty about his survival. The pontiff later rests and orders the cardinals seated while he speaks, in a scene repeated amid mounting concern for his end.
Reports from Rome on July 15 described Pope Pius X as restless at times with exhaustion and anemia cited as the likely cause rather than cardiac paralysis. Doctors noted no pneumonia, slight pleural effusion, and danger from prostration as the Pope remained weak and largely unresponsive, with limited nourishment and intermittent feverish condition.
The Jewish petition prepared by the B N A I B R I T H committee was received and Secretary Hay communicated with Mr. Riddle, the American chargé d affaires at St Peters burg, to outline steps for presenting the matter to the czar. The committee is satisfied with the plans for presenting the petition to the Russian government.
A Portland train car was held up by seven highwaymen who forced passengers to surrender valuables and shot Frederick Day, wounding him seriously after he complied with a hands up demand. The robbers escaped with about $300 in cash and jewelry.
