Haywood Denies Murder Charges In Testimony At Trial

W D Haywood, leader of the Western Federation of Miners, testified in his own defense in Boise on July 12. He denied involvement in the Steunenberg murder and other alleged crimes, described his early life, and stated he never paid Orchard for any crime. He described meetings with Orchard in Denver and last saw him in August 1905, reproaching him for deserting his wife.

Turpentine Trial Drives Weevils From Cushatta Cotton

News from Cushatta reports a turpentine test that repelled boll weevils in cotton fields. Haywood testified Orchard came to headquarters with a negro and Pettibone sought the mare for a delivery wagon. Haywood denied planning killings of Bell Peabody Hearn Moffitt or judges. He recalled meeting Steve Adams in 1902 and sending him seventy five dollars from his own funds. Adams had solicited prospects and would strike if he found anything. Adams and wife drew strike relief in 1904.
