New York January 30 another panel of 100 men was ordered for the Thaw trial. H C Brearley was chosen as the tenth juror. Evelyn Nesbitt Thaw and May MacKenzie were rivals in court as Clifford Hartridge escorted Mrs Thaw to the prisoner's pen for a brief ten minute reunion. Snowstorm delays kept other family members away. A rumor of a 100000 fund to sway jurors circulated but was unverified.
A census office clerk was arrested on a serious charge as investigators detail alleged misconduct. Authorities said the case involves improper handling of records and potential fraud, prompting internal review and departmental cooperation with police.
Police arrest M B Copeley, clerk at the census office, on suspicion of murdering his wife and two children Ray mond two and Ruth three months. Neighbors heard two pistol shots as Copeley said his wife died by suicide after a quarrel. He claims he did not shoot them and is held for investigation.
Washington January 30 The senate opened with Senator Hale urging more work and less talk. He cited failure to pass diplomatic and consular fortifications appropriations, which were on the calendar. Beveridge ended with advocacy for child labor restrictions.
The speaker addressed Congress’s constitutional authority over interstate and foreign commerce. He argued the power is absolute and could prohibit such commerce entirely, with policy and power as the central issue. Senators pressed on whether this power exists and how it could be exercised.
In Memphis on January 30 the Hardwood Manufacturers Association of the United States began its fifth annual meeting with over 250 members present. Key topics include freight car shortages and industry logistics. Dr Herman von Sprenck from Missouri Botanical Gardens spoke on agriculture related plant pathology. John A Fox from the National Rivers and Harbors Congress discussed irrigation and waterways improvement as they relate to lumber.
Former Governor Jefferson Davis was formally chosen as United States senator by the Arkansas legislature with 118 of 134 votes. Breckenridge received one vote and John F. Worthington five votes. The vote took place in Little Rock on January 30.
