A Jamaica earthquake and fire devastate Kingston damaging the mercantile district. Reports place dozens of fatalities and imply many missing or likely dead. Ships, offices, hotels like Myrtle Bank destroyed. relief efforts mobilized by British and colonial authorities and Royal Navy ships.
Cable from Holland Bay Jamaica says only part of Kingston was destroyed and about 300 injured. Fire under control by Monday night. panic in Kingston faded as rescue and care began. Pittsburg reports a government dam burst washed away 300 feet of the west bank of the Allegheny River at Springdale Pa.
