Fire destroys eight story building in New York

Fire at Alton and East Houston streets today wrecked the eight story Fayerweather and Laden leather belting factory. Loss estimated over 500000 with 1000 workers left jobless. Oil and grease stored inside caused intense heat and two explosions. Nearby residents evacuated. A wall fell onto the Second Avenue elevated line. one girdle was crushed. firemen narrowly escaped. Origin of the blaze unknown. General regret is expressed at his possible departure.

Manila crowds urge Taft to remain as governor departs debated

In Manila a crowd of about eight thousand gathered at Malacanan to urge Governor Taft to stay. Speakers from Federal, Liberal, and Nationalist groups pressed Taft to remain to preserve order and policy. Taft said future departure would not yet be decided and policy would not change with or without him.
