Russians Shell La Patai and Small Infantry Action Near Fang Mountain

Field Marshal Oyama reports a small infantry attack on Fang mountain on February 20 and Russian forces shelling La Patai on February 19 with heavy guns. In Baku disturbances and anti Armenian violence disrupt banks and business, amid racial tensions. First Steps Taken in Beef Trust Case Indictments

A special Federal grand jury venire was ordered in Chicago on February 21 as the first step toward indicting members of the alleged beef trust. Man Fatally Injured In Jennings Oil Field Accident

In Jennings Louisiana on February 21, Joe Hurlock of West Virginia was killed when the crown block tore the top of his head at an abandoned Jennings oil field well. Sid Keoughan, who had a contract to pull the pipe, oversaw the operation with Hurlock in charge. Another man sustained injuries.

An explosion at the Virginia mines near Birmingham Alabama entombs 110 to 116 union miners. Rescue teams from Birmingham and Bessemer work through midnight as debris slows access. Campbell Presses Roosevelt on Oil Inquiry

Representative Campbell of Kansas met with President Roosevelt to discuss the oil investigation. He reported telegrams urging an extension of the inquiry to Standard Oil in Beaumont Texas and said Standard Oil is preparing a defense. Great Fire Loss Estimated At Half Million Dollars

A fire at Charlston pier four of the Hoosiac tunnel docks destroyed piers 3 and 4 and damaged pier 5. The Furness Leyland line steamer Philadelphia suffered upper works damage and the steamer Dalton Hall was harmed. An adjacent grain elevator was saved and a fireman on the Philadelphian was seriously injured.

Enid Oklahoma February 21 Deputy Game Warden Eugene Watrous netted a record quail capture in Garfield County with two trunks filled and at least a thousand birds collected.

Robert L. Henry of Waco Texas testified that Judge Swayne walked four blocks while holding court in that city to show the judge did not spend money on travel. The testimony came on Monday in the impeachment proceeding.
