Five days of brutal fighting near Huan Mountain test the Russians and Japanese as artillery and infantry endure Arctic cold. Russians drive the enemy from forward trenches but gains are minimal with both sides holding positions. Russian cavalry performs well and a possible February lull looms.
Emperor Nicholas assured St. Petersburg workers that economic reforms would ease conditions and remove causes of strikes. The audience at Alexander Palace followed a pledge from Trepoff and Kekovskii, aided by a $2,000 imperial family gift for Jan. 22 victims. Strikes ripple from St. Petersburg and Moscow to Poland Irkutsk and Siberia.
St. Petersburg report dated Jan 30 states Sandepas village was set on fire by Russian artillery. A Jan 31 update notes ongoing bombardment and notes some Japanese garrison withdrawal. Russian balloonists observed to a remaining garrison portion.
Jefferson City reports the thirteenth ballot for United States senator with Cockrell at 78 votes, Niedringhaus 73, Kerens 12, Pettijohn 2, Solon E. Gilmore of Kansas City 1, and Finkelnburg of St. Louis 1.
Austin February 2 Senate approved a bill delaying remarriage in divorces where a party is found guilty for three years and the innocent party must wait one year. Senate also debated anti free pass measure and adopted an amendment on street railways. Faulk introduces $65000 appropriation for an industrial school for boys aged eight to sixteen. House committee on insurance favorably reports a premium tax bill. Both houses flooded with petitions.
In Galveston on February 2 four gam blers faced a jury in the corporation court and were fined from ten to fifteen dollars plus costs. A mis understanding of legal terms led the complaining witness to fail to prosecute, resulting in dismissals. Police report three more arrests as yet all incarcerations target the poorer class of gamblers, including negroes, with the better gaming houses closed pending quieter times.
In Hornellsville New York February 2 a collision between a passenger train on the Pittsburg and Northern Railroad and a sleigh carrying thirteen Universalist church ladies left seven dead on the scene and six injured two of whom died at a hospital. The leading sleigh warned the following and moved off but the box was left blocking the crossing as the engine struck it driving the sleighs to splinters.
The Japanese steamer Shinano brought word of a stabbing spree in a small Borneo town. A man armed with a heavy knife killed eight people and wounded seventeen before being stopped.
Superintendent Kimball received a dispatch from Cape Lookout life saving station keeper Gaskill stating a large steamship was ashore on the south side of Lookout shoals.
The house committee on Indian affairs voted down Representative Stephens of Texas resolution seeking investigation of the $750,000 attorney fee in the Choctaw Chickasaw citizenship cases, a matter already adjudicated by the courts.
Waterbury Vermont February 2 Mrs Mary Rogers who was to be hanged Friday for the murder of her husband has been reprieved until June 2 to allow time for a possible new trial.
Maxim Gorky author and arrested after the January 22 disturbances in St Petersburg has been released from custody.
Paris authorities confirm the death of M Henri German president of the Credit Lyonnais board of directors at age 60. The prominent financier led the Paris bank through decades of growth and served on its executive committee.

A party of eastern businessmen with accompanying ladies is sightseeing in the Del Rio area. Rev. R. C. McAdie, a Porto Rico minister, has been called to serve the Presbyterian church in Mineral Wells.
A Camden, Co dispatch reports the death of George F. E. Smith known as Pittsburg Phil. He was about forty, in poor health for a year or more, and began racing wagering nearly twenty years ago. He was widely said to have amassed a considerable fortune.
In the Dsiantchan area fourteen miles southeast of Tsinkhetchen the Japanese offensive was beaten off. Japanese losses included killed and a couple of hundred wounded. Russians later found many frozen Japanese wounded corpses near Chenhallen Pass, scantily clad and motionless. Potsdam reports Prince Hitei Fred erich is better.
