Trains Collide Near Lofty. Two Die in Pennsylvania Crash
A southbound passenger train on the Schuylkill Valley division of the Pennsylvania Railroad collided head on with a freight near Lofty Hazleton Pa. Engineer Robert Meyer and freight fireman Fred Gearhardt were killed. Engineer Corey and passenger train fireman John Smith plus a colored porter were injured. Several passengers had minor injuries. The crash was caused by a misreading of orders. A relief train with physicians went to the scene and the injured were taken to Hazleton hospital.

Coal strike commission hears operators as witnesses
Nearly five hundred people attended as coal operators closed their case before the strike commission on Friday. The miners plan rebuttal starting Monday with three or four days, and the commission will adjourn to the following Monday. Arguments are set to run much of the week beginning February 9 after 490 witnesses heard.

Checotah Mother Kills Infant in Jail Cell
In Muskogee Oklahoma Territory on January 31 Mrs. Hattie Payne from Checotah was declared violently insane and jailed after she killed her baby. She struck the infant’s head against the cell and discarded the body in the jail yard.
