Hitchcock Sees Leasing as Best Path for Indian Lands
Secretary Hitchcock argues that leasing coal lands held by the civilized tribes may yield fair value through royalties rather than sale. He favors surface land sales by sealed bids and urges Indians to lease coal lands, while noting oil and gas price issues and urging independent pipelines. The House later set cabinet salaries at 12000 and rescheduled salaries for other leaders, after rejecting a larger Senate salary hike. Representative John S Little of Arkansas resigns to become governor, effective Jan 14.
