Dispatches from the Cape theaters recount heavy fighting at Modder River with Methuen's forces entrenching amid suspected Boer outflanking. Casualties mount as British troops, including Highlanders and Guards, struggle to hold positions near the river. Meanwhile American-colonel Duncan Hood joins Boer ranks. Colenso position falls to British column advances.
Navy and army units transported to the front on Dec. 10 engaged insurgents led by Gen. Tino. Gen.
