In a secluded San Francisco cottage built in 1851 by J. P. Manrow a famed engineer, 1850s vigilantism and a vivid spirit manifestation unsettled witnesses. The recount details spectral phenomena during a tense seance with hands joined, a frightened stable servant, and a terrifying apparition from the ground.
The San Francisco vigilance leaders William H. Rhodes and Almarin Brooks Paul helped investigate alleged supernatural visitations at J. P. Manrow’s Larkin Street residence in September 1856. Knocks, levitating furniture, moving objects, touched hair, and a chair throwing Paul across the room are described. The phenomena ceased years before Manrow’s death, ending a long sequence of disturbances.
