Reports from Paris note the Beirut killing draws global attention but lacks official detail. French officials compare possible Turkish involvement to the Monastir Russian consul murder, while U S naval actions are deemed non political.
Washington dispatch reports Secretary Leishman urging immediate U S investigation into the assassination of Vice Consul Magerssen in Beirut. Turkish foreign minister promises an inquiry and punishment of the guilty, amid Macedonian tensions and protection concerns for Americans in Beirut and Harpoot.
Washington dispatch reports prompt U S action after the assassination of U S vice consul Megerssen in Beirut Syria. President Roosevelt orders immediate measures and Loomis wires Leischman to press the Porte to protect Americans and prevent further attacks. The European squadron under Rear Admiral Cotton is ordered to Beirut if needed.
A Constantinople dispatch reports the United States will dispatch a squadron to Turkish waters to demand reparation for the murder of William C. Magelssen, the United States vice consul at Bierut Syria, and to punish the assassin.
Sofia Aug 28 reports an eastbound express from Budapest to Constantinople was blown up near Kuleli Barga, about twenty five miles south of Adrianople. Seven killed and fifteen injured. Dynamite bombs used. All cars were smashed. Apparently revolutionists carried out the attack.
The Metropolitan steamer H M Whitney struck the schooner John Booth off New Haven and sank it. Five crew members and a Salem, Massachusetts passenger drowned. the Whitney rescued Captain Booth and one sailor. Two cars wrecked in Constantinople when a third class passenger threw a bomb.
Ernest Snelling and Charles Cook were arrested at Marlow by U S Marshal Madsen and jailed in Chickasha on charges of robbing the Denton Oklahoma post office in the absence of the postmaster and his wife on Tuesday afternoon.
A terse note from Haa and Ton Oklahoma on August 28 reports Taw nanche county citizens were denied a request to form a new local council. Officials did not specify reasons but indicated no action would proceed.
The War Department refused an exhibition of Chief Geronimo at the St. Louis exposition, citing that he remains a prisoner of war and must not be displayed. The denial also covered fifteen other war prisoners included in the request.
The Waco city council approved an ordinance authorizing bonds totaling 500000 dollars to fund a waterworks system to be owned and operated by the city.
