In Hamlet North Carolina on a Sunday morning a party of about forty black travelers led by Booker Washington ate breakfast in the railroad dining room while a white party from Pullman cars, including Senator A O Bacon and Joel Hunt, paced outside and went hungry. The negroes occupied the main dining room and smoked after eating. whites improvised a small dining room but refused to enter and, after the negroes left, were invited in but declined.
