Astor Battery Leads Assault in Manila Victory
A World dispatch from Manila via Hong Kong reports the Astor battery spearheading the attack, supported by Minnesota volunteers and the Twenty third regulars. After heavy fire, reserves reoccupied two guns, and the Spaniards fled, with about 200 killed or wounded and 8000 captured.
Troops storm fortress in Malate and take Luneta battery
The Colorado and California troops, followed by the Eighteenth Infantry, pressed into Malate after the flag fell. Private Phoenix was killed on the ramparts as he raised the American flag, and Private Richard Holmes hoisted it in his place. MacArthur’s brigade fought on the right as General Greene captured Binondo. The insurgents entered Malate and Ermita, looting as troops tried to stop them. General Wheeler assumed command at Camp Wikoff and relief ships arrived from Porto Rico amid yellow fever concerns.

First Cotton Mill Found in Beverly Mass Set Apart
Beverly Mass claims to host the first American cotton mill. Mayor Rantoul's research links the Beverly site to Washington’s era, noting diaries from 1789 describe the mill vividly. A commemorative tablet marks Beverly as the mill’s birthplace, predating Pawtucket's claim.
