A prominent New Yorker is named as a victim in the Monchant Lot Dow case. The report notes local authorities probing the incident and identifying possible suspects.
Leopold Wertheimer, wealthy dry goods merchant, was shot three times at his New York home. Joseph Simpson, former security guard at Wertheimer's firm, was arrested on charges of the shooting amid questions about motive. Simpson had lost a recent job and allegedly demanded money after a prior fire at Aaron and Wertheimer.
East Orange New Jersey April 28 Mrs Stephen Browne a wealthy resident of East Orange has died by her own hand using laudanum after wandering at night and returning claiming typhoid pneumonia. She had cared for her ailing husband and was worn out by the illness. A sanitarium was planned but she escaped nurses locked herself in a room and died despite doctors efforts. The report also notes military and political items from Manila New York and Tunis.
In Pomfret Albert Peterson age forty was thrown during a wrestling match at a friend’s home and sustained a broken neck. He was taken to Putnam hospital in critical condition. A second brief reports an Indian, Dave Ove, fatally shot near Luisvi city, Lehigh County, Oklahoma.
Soviet Foreign Office dismisses Pekin dispatch of April 23 listing eight Russian demands. It calls most points false or unimportant while stressing a plague link to an English ship and preserving current Manchuria administration, customs, and Russian control of telegraph lines.
In Pekin on April 28 Minister Conger protested two points of Russia's Manchurian accord drafts. He objected to pledges limiting port openings tied to the American commercial treaty with Mukden and Taku Shan and to restricting foreign workers in China to Russians. The U S reserves judgment on other demands but will insist on treaty rights if violated.
John La Rue a Fort Worth man shot and killed on Broad street in Texarkana after a dispute over a striking machine with David McDaniel. Napoleon McDaniel returned fire, killing La Rue. both McDaniels jailed. Napoleon previously served in state prison for a train robbery but was pardoned two years ago.
