Illinois Court to Pass on Thumb Print Evidence
Springfield Illinois December 15 one of the most important cases before the Illinois supreme court opens the docket in the appeal of Thomas Jennings a negro convicted in Chicago and sentenced to death for the murder of Charles D Miller a Rock Island railroad clerk. Miller was shot in his home September 18 1910 while defending his daughter from an intruder who entered through a window. The killer left bloody fingerprints on a balcony rail which police used for identification. Jennings an ex convict was arrested on suspicion and convicted largely on the fingerprint evidence. His lawyers sought supreme court review just before execution claiming the fingerprint evidence invalid. It is said to be the fastest case of its kind ever carried to the high court.
