Vernon Elliott Smith 11 Dies After Appendicitis Fight

Vernon Elliott Smith, born November 30, 1900, died October 17, 1912, after an eight week battle with appendicitis and a second attack. He was treated by a nurse and two operations, attended school until last Tuesday, and died in Chillicothe. Funeral services were held at Mt Olive Baptist Church and burial followed in Mt Olive Cemetery.

Linn County corn shows set for November 12 to 19

The Linn County Farmers Association announces county corn shows in Bucklin Brookfield Laclede Meadville Browning and Linneus from November 12 to 19. A $100 silver trophy cup will be awarded again this year and premium lists will be set later. Membership dues are 25 cents payable to the vice president or secretary.

Elizabeth Perkins obituary notes long Missouri life and large family

Elizabeth C. Perkins born March 26 1837 near Oakland Indiana died October 5 1912 at J T Long home aged 75 6 10. She married James Long November 9 1855 and ten children were born to the union. Survived by numerous children grandchildren and great grandchildren. Funeral conducted by Rev White at the Long home with interment in Horse Head Valley cemetery. The notice also highlights local improvements including a World Beater lighting plant and praises Scott Browning and neighbors Bevan Southwick.

McCollum's Show Team Wins Ribbons at Milan and Seeke

B McCollum from near Lingéus visited Saturday night with Mr and Mrs J A Calhoun. He returned from Milan with three ribbons from the Sullivan county show including first on best driving team first on best single driver and second on best horse to halter. He also earned third premium for best carriage team at Seekers show. Linn county can be proud of this valuable team.

Progressive party lecture by Dr. Green at opera house

Dr. Thos. E. Green of Chicago spoke at the opera house Monday night in support of the Progressive party. Rain kept many away, but the hall nearly filled with an attentive audience. Music by Browning band preceded the talk, Linn Male Quartet unable to attend due to bad roads. The address lasted almost two hours and drew high praise for its breadth and thought.
