North Salem Holds First Home Coming Day
On Sunday September 26 1937 North Salem celebrated its Home Coming Day drawing residents from Brookfield Linneus Kansas City Browning Milan Purdin New Boston Newtown LaPlata Green City Green Castle Winigan Shelby Bucklin and Miami. A 60 foot long dinner table overflowed with food while improvised programs included readings by Mrs R H Smith and Mrs D G Seymour talks by Rev Hewlett and R J McCollum and songs by Inez and Louise Lambert. Attendance voted to repeat the event in 1938 on the last Sunday in August. The closing hymn was God Be With You Till We Meet Again.

Mrs. Martha Lockhart of Washington reports the death of Alfred H. VanWye from a heart attack at his home 3011 Monroe Kansas City Mo Sunday afternoon October 3rd. Burial Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. He was a son of deceased Dr. and Mrs. VanWye and survived by brother Arthur L. VanWye of Kansas City and sisters Mrs. Martha Lockhart of Washington and Mrs. J. B. Jones of Hereford Texas. He spent his boyhood days in the area and was well known to readers.

A bobwhite quail has spent summer and autumn roaming with a flock of White Holland turkeys on G. E. Wilhite's farm west of town. Each evening it returns with the flock to the barnyard and roosts on the barn roof after a cornmeal supper, drawing much commentary.

Farmers urged to plant fall small grain for soil program
County Agent Hall received a Washington recommendation allowing half seeding of fall small grain as a nurse crop for timothy bluegrass and red clover with land classified for conserving and building payments. Seeding now helps prevent soil washing and provides spring pasture. inspections for 1987 are underway with 80 percent of Linn County farms requesting inspections.
