Grain feeding of calves on Missouri farms shows gains at weaning
Forty farmers using a shared method with calves over three years in cooperation with the Missouri College of Agriculture report consistent results. Calves intended for fall market should start grain early, either with cows in a creep or separated with twice daily nursing and grain access. A creep should be shaded near water with wide entries to exclude cows. Self feeders work well. plans available from the Missouri College of Agriculture. Calves receive a ration of shelled corn and oats, then oats and linseed meal. pre weaning corn to linseed meal ratio of 8 to 1. Trials show 12 to 15 bushels of grain consumed and about 600 pounds at weaning. Heavier calves around 550 pounds with fat often sell better, though not always.
