Pilot saves life in Midway clash etched in two flyers

Two U S Navy pilots from Missouri and Browning, Brassfield and Elders, were linked by a Midway rescue 20 months later at Miami. Elders, shot at near a sinking torpedo bomber, was saved when Brassfield aboard Yorktown opened fire on pursuing Japanese fighters. Elders later met Brassfield at the Miami Naval Air Station as instructors.

They voted a $2 50 Red Cross contribution to Duncan Township and collected funds for a Church Project. Blocks for a club quilt were tied and the hostess gift of 28 cents won by Mrs Lyle Wickham.
