PIPES LETTER ON FLATHEAD COUNTRY OPPORTUNITIES
A.W. Pipes writes from Polson Montana in May 1909 detailing the Flathead Indian Reservation. He describes the geography the tribes the 1904 act opening land to settlement allotments and the fertile Mission valley where whites now farm and produce 25 to 60 bushels of grain per acre with heavy oats weighing up to 50 pounds per bushel. He notes strong soil yields for wheat timothy hay and garden crops and comments on favorable leasing terms for whites. To be continued.
