Thousands of Soldiers One Lives to Laboratory
Thousands of American soldiers owe their lives to a First Medical General laboratory that supported doctors in Europe for 25 months. Set up in Salisbury, England, in June 1943, it aided rapid diagnoses via tissue, blood, and body fluid tests. In March 1945 it moved to Paris, housed at Pasteur Institute and later University of Paris, using a secretly completed lab by the French underground. It was a small army unit of 23 officers and 70 enlisted men, covering eight fields including bacteriology, serology, virology, pathology, entomology, parasitology, veterinary work, and chemistry with subfields like blood chemistry and toxicology.
