A wartime letter dated June 10 1918 from Mrs W A Myers Browning Missouri to her son in Canandiagua Naval Forces Eur ope describes remote lodging in service life. She asks about May and Lee and notes lack of home correspondence since sailing while stating she remains in good health and hopeful for a reunion.
A son named Everett sends a brief, affectionate message hoping to see his family soon. He closes with love and asks for an early reply.
William M Hawkins born 1838 Fleming County Kentucky moved to Linn County Missouri 1856 with uncle. Union Army veteran wounded at Shiloh. married Minerva Cassity March 2 1865. Survived by wife daughter Amata Walker son A A Hawkins two grandchildren and sister Mahala Shields. Lived in Sullivan County since 1881. postmaster and County Judge. Died July 4 1918 after paralysis and pneumonia at age 79. Funeral at Mt Zion with Rev Underwood. He was a kind husband and loving father.
Salvation Army units operate 201 war huts on the western front offering canteen meals cooked by American women, clubs for soldiers, music, magazines, and writing materials. A mothers and families department runs rest and bedrooms for wives and mothers near cantonments, with officers’ wives in charge.
The Salvation Army plans to raise five million dollars to build huts for soldiers and sailors in France and the United States, equip and staff them with trained personnel, and cover transportation and maintenance costs. It will not duplicate work done by the Y M C A Red Cross Knights of Columbus or the Young Men Hebrew Association, with whom it cooperates. The Missouri phase seeks $206,000 backed by the State Council of Defense and government officials.

The writer notes fair weather two weeks without rain, ripe Strawberries gooseberries gardens and comfortable home life despite front line danger. He describes occasional artillery duels and near misses with the Huns while praising home comforts and missing familiar people.
A letter from Harry A. Long of the A. E. F. describes pay increases to 41 50 per month and a 10000 dollar life insurance costing 6 5 monthly. He reports allotment problems, new monthly savings of 20, sending money home, and best health while awaiting replies and hoping Uncle Lewis Long would share the memory.
A letter from Henry H. Lamb to Linn County Democrats states he seeks a second term as circuit clerk, notes a comfortable salary after recent legislation, and pledges faithful service if renominated and elected. He adds he will not seek another term beyond this one. The Brookfield Fair committee touts Blanché McKenney high school horses and Major Gordon Bennett as top attractions for 1978, promising a large, entertaining meet.

Announcement of the marriage of Miss Cordin Broyles and Mr. Charles Federick Hillman solemnized at the home of Rev. Phil C. Baird 1101 Robinson Street Oklahoma City on Tuesday evening June 25. Mrs. Hillman formerly married to Dr. J C Gorr of Chicago, divorced two years ago. She is prominent in social circles.
