Sanitation boosts Iowa pig gains by 700 pounds per sow

A Iowa farmer compared two pig lots under standard conditions and the Bureau of Animal Industry swine sanitation system. Under ordinary care four sows produced 665 pounds of pork from 35 pigs, while six sows under sanitary conditions produced 5,200 pounds, an average 866 pounds per sow, 700 pounds more per sow. The method avoids roundworms by keeping pigs on worm free pasture away from permanent hog lots and uses waste oil boards. Lime can be applied any convenient time to benefit clover and alfalfa, says M F Miller, with flexible timing for soil improvement.

Purpose Of Flock Determines Its Size In Farming

The article argues a profitable flock size for hens lies at 75 or 200+ birds. Flocks under 75 require more labor per bird, while over 200 allow better market sales. A 75 to 200 range is less profitable, and large flocks enable shipping eggs to top markets with surplus stock.
