Missouri's First Chartered College and Its Promoters
This week marks 1831 chartering of Missouri's first college near Palmyra in Marion county. Promoted by William Muldrow and local businessmen, it funded itself via land-based income sharing among professors and students, attracting eastern support and notable figures like Rev Ezra Stiles Ely. The 1837 panic collapsed the plan, later sold to the Masonic Grand Lodge, and moved to Lexington in 1848.
