Col E D Reed Named to Denver Stock Show Committee

Col E D Reed of Wheatland Wyoming has been appointed as one of three on a shifting committee for the National Western Stock Show to be held in Denver in January. The letter from W E Skinner dated December 18 1909 details his duties and the other appointees Ed Burke of Geneva Nebraska and F M Boot of Denver. Reed, once known locally as Hog Reed, is praised for his growing reputation as an expert stock man and his move west is noted with pride by his former friends.

The Masons celebrated St John’s Day with a well attended event at the M E C S. Dr H E Epperson presided and gave a welcome. D B Hunters lecturePolishing up the Masonic Lights was praised. Rev W F Laidley spoke plainly and well. The PEOs hosted BILs with a New Year watch party at E B Fields home. Cooks and toasts followed by games and music.

Linn County farmer wins top corn prize at Columbia show

J R Crookshanks and Sons dominated Linn County entries at the Columbia corn show last week. J R Crookshanks captured Missouri’s best ear of corn and placed highly in several open classes. Luther and Herman Crookshanks also earned top finishes in youth divisions as Bob Crookshanks builds a state reputation.

Train Wreck Near Moulton injures C. A. Fleming

A two section stock train split on a grade near Moulton. The second section crashed into the caboose, wrecking the car and engine. Passengers escaped in time. C. A. Fleming suffered serious bruises but others were unharmed.

Masked Social at E. A. Jones Rink Draws Crowd

A masked social at the E. A. Jones skating rink drew a crowded crowd on Saturday night. Many visitors could not obtain skates while costumes amused the attendees and many nationalities were represented.

P. E. O. Chapter V met Wednesday December 22 at Mrs. Jennie Eppersons home. The house was beautifully decorated in Christmas colors. Eight members answered roll call. The group will meet with Mrs. Bertha Tomlin on January 12.

Browning Mourns Henry Bailey a Local Citizen

Henry Bailey, born May 18 1887 in Michigan, died suddenly on Saturday December 25 1909 at age 72. Funeral services were held December 27 at the First M E church, with burial in Hoover cemetery. His sons Christian R. and Curtis attended. daughter Nora was in Utah. The Peters Produce Co announces cash sales from January 1 1910. J W Oxley traded his residence and business for 320 acres near Howard Kansas for about $20 000 with move planned by March 1. Weather notes describe unusually cold winter with sledding, scarce hay, high hog prices, and tight stock feed conditions impacting pork profitability.
