Real Estate Bargains From Early Settlers Across Colonies
The piece chronicles historic land purchases and deals from Manhattan to Maine, New Jersey, Maryland, and Louisiana. It notes Peter Minuit’s 24 dollar purchase of Manhattan, Van Twiller’s 172 acres on Governor’s Island, and colonial transfers involving Penn, Baltimore, and Berkeley Carteret. It highlights low early prices, later compensations by the United States, and the vast Louisiana gain at 1803 price of 15 million dollars averaging under three cents per acre.
