Howard Bettington is drawn into a perilous yacht voyage where the mysterious Boss named William Clements plots to extort a million by turning Radway and his family into hostages. Bettington must foil the scheme while hiding his own loyalties aboard the ship and facing a crew under the Boss's deadly control.
Floyd Unwin Howard Bettington and Alfred Gibbons discuss a college pledge to aid each other in adversity. Unwin seeks help to educate his children Bob and Mary. Gibbons doubts legality but offers a job for Mary's future, while Radway plans a voyage and Bettington is kidnapped on the Maine coast.
In the Barnegat Light voyage, painter Bettington confronts the refined Boss, not a bully but a pale, seemingly elderly figure. The Boss offers terms aboard a year-long voyage, taunting Bettington with an obituary misdirection while exposing a deadly plot linked to a friend’s murder.
Bettington is awakened by a coffee bearing boy named Augustus Slivers and learns breakfast will be served in the main saloon. On the quarter deck he meets the Boss in a blue and gold uniform and is urged to be introduced to Hallett to gain the women’s trust, as Hallett has already sown distrust.
On the deck tensions rise as Hallett resents limited command while Doctor Waite arrives. Radway orders cocktails and a luncheon, treating Clements and Bettington with sharp, impatient authority. The crew readiness to patch Radway up clashes with Hallett’s belief in strict hierarchy. To be continued.
