Proven Sires Lost to Butchers Highlight Dairy Debate
D. L. Fout of the University of Idaho urges dairymen to retain proven sires until testing records confirm worth. Idaho records show two proven sires butchered before evaluation, and a Holstein sire whose daughters outproduced dams by 1,095 pounds of milk and 65.5 pounds butterfat was also slaughtered. Contests indicate about one third of pure bred sires underperform, one third hold or slightly improve, and the rest show major gains, underscoring the need to keep proven bulls alive in service.

Hold Milk Flow During Summer by Good Feeding
Summer losses in milk production are usually the heaviest of the year. Cows rely on imagination and must be kept content when returning from pasture. Provide supplemental feeds, as grain alone is insufficient and roughage is needed. If silage is unavailable, mow grass or use hay to supplement pasture.
Twin Bull Calves Found Successful as Breeders
Twin bull calves have equal prospects to mature into successful breeding animals as single bulls. Twin heifer calves are also likely to become productive breeding cows. When a bull is born twin with a heifer, the heifer often fails as a breeding cow, but the bull remains as likely to become a successful breeding bull.
Fooding and testing cattle for profitable herds
A guide urges keeping a few good cows instead of many poor ones. Feed the herd well with grain plus pasture, invest time in developing the herd with quality bulls, and measure each cow’s producing ability by weighing and testing the milk.

Auto Shipping Expands Fruit and Vegetable Distribution
A U.S. Department of Agriculture study notes that while large cities receive most car load shipments, the growing use of auto trucks enhances distribution to smaller markets. In 1926, 40 to 45 percent of box apples in 17 Southern cities were redistributed locally by trucks, helping small towns gain access to fresher produce and longer shopping seasons.
