Billboard Lesson Sparks Newspaper Debate Over Notices
An editor and merchant argued whether billboards or newspapers are read more. The merchant claimed board readers are more numerous, then learned his daughter’s wedding notice was not in the paper because it had been posted on his billboard. The editor had removed it to test the claim. Also included is a roster noting illness affecting the Honor Roll and class rankings with numerous names and grades in senior, sophomore, and freshman classes.

Cockleburs threaten hogs and cornbelt fertilizer tips
Experiments for farm betterment warn Missouri farmers that sprouting cockleburs now emerge earlier due to open winter and wet spring. Dr J W Connaway urges keeping hogs off infested fields until burs sprout and plants reach three to four inches. Green cocklebur is not poisonous. Antidotes include melted lard or castor oil and linseed oil mixtures. The column also discusses fertilizer use on corn, recommending 175 to 200 pounds acid phosphate per acre on average land, with options to apply with grain drill or with manure, and notes effects depend on weather. Slats diary excerpt reflects rural life and a wedding report for Orvyl Helms and Maxine Lee in Linneus, with background on the bride and groom.
