The fall and winter term at the Climax school near Shafter ended Saturday with teacher Mrs. Reba Rhodes Nickell completing her first term. Parents and neighbors filled the house for a noon feast and a large afternoon program, praising her work and the pupils progress.
An advertisement invites readers to a Milan hotel event on April 24 featuring Dr Palm to learn about improving vision with new eye treatments. The notice promotes seeing like new.
Bundridge closes Saturday March 25 marking the end of a successful term with Miss Ruth Lawrence as teacher. Patrons arrived with baskets for a noon dinner, then a cafeteria style meal followed by a pupil program. Prizes went to Howard Head J. W. Lumsden Fay Lumsden and Mary Harmon.
Cora district bid farewell Friday as Esta Hayes, teacher at Cora School, wrapped up a successful term. A crowded noon hour dinner followed by an afternoon program showcased well trained pupils and the teachers’ dedication. Hayes will take a school nearer home with a larger salary.
Local observers and officials praised Cora School for its quality and progress, with broad positive remarks from teachers, parents, and students about its programs and facilities.
Clem Spring school marks the close of another term. Miss Doris Fanning conducts a successful program with prizes for perfect attendance and grade winners including Ruth Robinson Dorothy McClaren Vergie Hollon and several Hollon pupils. Patrons praise the teacher for a commendable term.
The April 6 gathering at Mrs. W. W. Crawford's home had eleven members present though Mrs. May Schrock was absent due to illness. Mrs Mattie Duncan led scripture on The Daily Task and evangelism was presented by Mrs. Rudloff. Mrs. Carr led the business, Ivah Rhodes reported, and Mrs. Haning attended. Next meeting with Mrs Kate Calhoun on Thursday at 2. Guests welcome.
The Scottsville district ended a productive term with teacher Miss Lucille Rachford guiding pupils through a fine afternoon program. Eighth graders Eugene Brassfield Paul Pederson and Kathleen Rachford graduated. Prizes awarded for perfect attendance and best notebook.
W. R. Ross of Purdin Missouri offers a 28 Chevrolet or a Model A Ford in trade for a team. He will pay or take the difference to complete the deal.
Leon Wallace Vincent and Miss Mary Evelyn Stufflebean wed in Linneus after securing a license. The bride, daughter of Ella Stufflebean, is a local teacher educated at Kirksville State Teachers College. The groom, son of L. J. Vincent, is a prominent local graduate. They reside on the J. C. Green farm and receive best wishes from the community.
Thieves broke into the W. H. Dickinson warehouse Monday night and stole merchandise valued around thirty five dollars including soap canned goods bacon tobacco and other items. Doors were left open as Mr and Mrs Walter Smith of Owl Pharmacy woke to the noise but he did not see or hear anyone. Some local talent is blamed for the incident.
Brookfield hosted the Linn County event with classes A and B. Winners include Browning in first for one act play and second in boys quartet mixed quartet. Soprano solo Virginia Jennings placed third. Boy’s glee club took the top spot ahead of the Kirksville meet.
M A Holman was reelected superintendent and Mr Duckworth principal at a Thursday meeting. A future hire will join high school staff while Miss Alpha Harris and Miss Lorraine Glaze lead grades five through eight and one through four respectively. Salaries for chosen teachers will be cut twenty five percent to balance the budget amid revenue shortfalls. BrownIng schools report thirty seven grade pupils. two teachers will cover the grades.
The Browning school board convened Thursday night with two newly elected members taking the oath. Mrs. Floy Peterson and W. P. Nickell were sworn in as board members, then the group elected J. D. Burwell president W. H. Dickinson vice president J. R. Williams secretary and W. P. Nickell treasurer.
Emma B Bennett Burns Murphy born November 11 1865 died April 5 1933 age 67 4 25 married George S Burns in 1905. Her husband died 1914. Remarried Henry Murphy in 1929. Survived by sister Mrs Florence Gable brother J Thomas Bennett one child who died in infancy eight great nieces and nephews and a great nephew Lavon Norvell. Funeral at M E Church South in Purdin conducted by Rev S E Hoover interment at Mundell Cemetery.
We express gratitude for the kindness shown during the sickness and death of Mrs. Henry Murphy. The sincere wishes for the Lord's blessings come from Henry Murphy, Florence Gable and family, J. T. Bennett and family.
The Stitch and Chatter Club met on March 26 with Frances and Mildred Tucker. Twenty five members and five visitors attended. two Ocean Wave quilts were completed. A bird cage accident killed Mildred’s four year canary. April 5 meeting had 26 members. Doris Hanman brought two quilts, Wedding Ring and initial quilt H, not completed. The Purples led in contests. Loy Kelly’s boy was injured by a visiting dog. Camora Abbott was absent sick.
The Willing Worker's Club held an all day meeting with Mrs. Maude Christy on April 5. Poor weather reduced attendance, yet participants completed one reach of the wild rose quilt and nearly half of it by noon. A brief business session followed before closing with a Betty Brown recitation.
Acknowledges defeat in the city collector race and thanks supporters and friends for loyal backing. Signed by Mrs Zella Woodworth.
Annie Eliza Kirby born February 28 1860 in Clay Township Linn County Missouri died April 5 1933 at daughter Mrs Charles Knapp in Oxford Kansas age 73 years 1 month 7 days. She married Jesse Turner September 28 1879 had daughter Eva. husband died March 8 1915. Joined Mt Olive Baptist then Linneus and Browning churches active in Ladies Aid. Married R. H. Warren November 12 1919. Survived by husband and his children and many relatives. Funeral held April 7 in Linneus with Rev Meyers and Rev Tomlin. interment Linneus I. O. O. F. cemetery.
