Applause greets cyclist on return to Brownfield

David Blakely a 28 year old child protective services worker completed a 460 mile weeklong bicycle ride through Central and West Texas to publicize the Terry County Child Welfare Board and raise awareness. He rode with his father in a van wind drag boost and credited his wife Cindy with the most support. The reception in Brownfield included the mayor and county judge and sparked local contributions to the welfare board. Blakely hopes to make the ride an annual event and plans to repeat it next summer.

Shooting in yard prompts Brownfield police report

Brownfield police investigated a Friday shooting in which a 25 year old man fired twice toward the ground near a woman in her front yard around 10 p.m. She provided a statement and Sgt. Michael Hickson recovered one bullet from the ground. Other reports include a burglary interruption near Meadow and a sexual assault claim tied to a nightclub companion.

City to Add Seven Percent Sales Tax on Garbage

Brownfield will start collecting a seven percent sales tax on garbage collections in October. The Brownfield Cubs upset the Post Antelopes 20 to 19 to clinch week four in the high school and college mix. Rhonda Hargrave led with five misses and a perfect tiebreaker, earning 15 dollars and a grand prize drawing entry.

Terry SWCD director election set for October 6 1987

An election for a Zone 3 director on the Terry Soil and Water Conservation District will be held October 6 at 7 p.m. in the Terry County Park Amphitheater. Voters must own agricultural land in the district live in a county within the district and be 18. Candidates must own land in their zone be 18 and actively farming or ranching and live in a qualifying county. Zone 3 spans from Tex. Hwy. 137 to the Dawson and Lynn county lines and U.S. Hwy. 380. Current director members include Robert Luker Brownfield. The Terry SWCD based in Brownfield promotes soil and water conservation on farms. See Election pg. 2.
