Terry County Commissioners approve 1984 budget and tax rate

The Terry County Commissioners met September 26 in the county courthouse with all present. They approved the 1984 budget showing an assessed valuation of 1,280,201,310 and left the tax levy at 20 cents, the same as last year, with total county taxes of 2,560,402.62 and estimated collection of 2,432,382.49 for the current year. Delinquent taxes are projected at 76,812.08. Judge Carolyn Proctor completed a 20 hour course to comply with Article 5972 of the Texas Revised Civil Statutes.

Brownfield to add ammonia in water treatment this fall

Brownfield will add a new chemical to its water system as regulators enforce an Environmental Protection Agency rule under the Safe Drinking Water Act. Terry County Fair features 12 departments and schedule

The eighth Terry County Fair runs October 6 to 8 at the National Guard Armory in Brownfield with 12 departmental exhibits plus outside displays and a barnyard for kids. Exhibits are accepted October 6 from 8 am to 6 pm and October 7 from 8 am to 8:30 am. Judging begins October 7 at 8:30 am. the fair opens to the public at 1 pm and runs until 7 pm October 7 and 11 am to 6 pm October 8. A Harvest Festival shuttle operates October 8, with a concessions stand. Information booklets are available at the Brownfield Chamber of Commerce.

Brownfield Spirit of the Plains Band Wins 4A Best Band

Brownfield High School Spirit of the Plains marching band won Class 4A Best Band at the South Plains Fair Parade in Lubbock marching 3 miles with 50 bands. Band director Rob Lovett praised their performance. On Saturday the percussion section earned first place at the Jones Stadium contest at Texas Tech University.

Brownfield man escapes jail after assault on officer

Peter Anthony Martinez, a Brownfield man, was charged with forcibly assaulting Officer James Geddes to escape from Brownfield Police Department custody around 7 10 p m Monday. Geddes was treated for head injuries. Martinez was captured Tuesday in Denver City and faces four charges including escape and unauthorized use of a vehicle with a $100 000 bond sought.

Grand Jury to consider 19 cases in Terry County

The Terry County Grand Jury must convene at 9:30 a.m. on October 5 to review 19 cases, including Rhonda Bearden for marijuana possession and Esteban Morin Cisneros Jr for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, along with several burglary and theft charges.

Harvest Festival Plans Oct 8 Parade and Queen Coronation

The 1983 Harvest Festival runs Oct 6 to Oct 8 in Brownfield with a Queen Candidate Talent Show, a downtown parade to Coleman Park at 10 a.m., continuous shows at the amphitheater, and a grand finale at 7:30 p.m. featuring the Queen Coronation. Prizes include a $1750 Disney World trip and $6000 in cash and prizes.
