Brownfield rebate checks rise while overall state payments fall

Brownfield’s sales tax rebate rose 13.22 percent from $45,131.74 to $51,098.11 this year. Yet total state comptroller payments to cities and counties fell from $516,038.94 to $498,950.63 year to date. Meadow received no rebate this month, totaling $1,427.79 for the year, down from $3,120.92. Statewide, $112.1 million was disbursed to 943 cities and 106 counties, up 15.6 percent from last year, with Houston at $15.1 million, Dallas $8 million, San Antonio $5.9 million, Austin $4.4 million, Fort Worth $3 million, and El Paso $2.5 million. Several South Plains counties posted increases for the month and year, including Andrews, Muleshoe, Dimmitt, Lamesa, and Hereford, with year-to-date totals and percent changes listed.

Masons set open house at Brownfield lodge

The Brownfield Masonic Lodge at 116 W Main invites the public to an open house from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday September 27. Lodges statewide participate to explain Freemasonry history and purpose. Refreshments will be served.

Terry County site yields Jicarilla era artifacts and dating

An archeology field school in Terry County unearthed arrowheads scrapers bones pottery and obsidian at a kill siteused by Jicarilla Apaches. Carbon 14 on charcoal from about eight inches deep dated to 1648 A D with finds tying to Edwards Plateau Alibates and Tecovas flints and Rio Grande Glaze pottery.

Ag producer seminar set in commons Oct 8

A Terry County Ag Producer Seminar will be held at 7 p.m. October 8 in the Brownfield High School Commons. Sponsored by the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, the Terry County Ag Leadership Institute, and the Terry Soil and Water Conservation District, the event offers a free meal and two hours of continuing education for private applicator license holders. Noted speakers include Dr. James Supak and Dr. Carl Anderson, with discussion on harvest aid chemicals, cotton marketing outlook, and TAMPRICE pricing software.
