Helping home opens to Rita evacuees in front of Gayle DeBusk house
Gayle DeBusk hosted about 16 Houston area evacuees from Rita at her 415 E Stewart home. The group, including families from Spring Deer Park and Morton, traveled 700 miles over 18 hours to escape the storm, sharing a front yard, kids, animals, and a hopeful, resilient mood despite heavy winds and rain forecasts. They arrived after a long caravan, while some relatives remained blocked by traffic. DeBusk coordinated aid with a local VFW and prepared supplies for the arriving families before the evacuation tale continues on page 4.
