Brownfield News (Newspaper) - September 24, 1972, Brownfield, Texas Page 2, Brownfield news sunday september 24, educational comments its a rewarding profession in Many ways by Jesse i Veronf jr., principal Brownfield High school Quot to learn to attain knowledge to become Wise is a necessity for every Noble soul. To teach to communicate that knowledge to share that Wisdom with others is equally an impulse of a Noble nature and worthiest work of the above is a portion of a writing found in masonic literature. In my opinion this concept has to be a Basic part of every Good teachers philosophy. Indeed it would be simpler to remain Dull and never put Forth any Effort to attain knowledge to become Wise requires a certain amount of contemplation. It would be infinitely easier never to contemplate but such is not the nature of a Quot Noble Quot soul. The Noble soul is an ardent seeker after knowledge and tirelessly works to attain knowledge by Reading studying reflecting digesting and discriminating. If we succeed in becoming Wise and lock up that Wisdom within ourselves it is truly a shameful sin. The True end is not simply in the attaining of knowledge but the imparting of that knowledge and the sharing of Wisdom with others. In this manner we surely Are following the precepts of the Quot Noble soul Quot and performing the worthiest work of Man. The real purpose of every teacher is to perform that work to teach to communicate knowledge to share Wisdom and be an inspiration to our Young people. There can be no More rewarding profession than that of teacher i for teaching can fulfil a duty to Mankind. We constantly see our returns in our students As they mature and assume responsible roles in society. To visit with a former student who has become a worthy member if a Community is the greatest Reward a teacher can have. It is my opinion that the Brownfield Public schools Are blessed with dedicated teachers who share a desire to communicate knowledge to our Young people and by working diligently they Are accomplishing that desire. Bits of this n that no smoking but drink like a fish. By Celeste Many places in our american society today do not allow smoking due to the fact it has been linked to lung cancer and is probably the cause of Many other diseases a yet there is nothing said about liquor. No More advertisements appear on television enticing the youth to take up the dread habit of inhaling the cancer Sticks Thomas while our youth Are learning ear catching tunes and watching cartoon characters inhale hard liquor and Beer like it was going out of style. This seems to us an injustice. Nothing Good can be said for either of the vices but it does seem that drinking is More harmful to the entire population than smoking. Many americans Are seemingly indifferent towards Drunken driving they feel it will never affect them. They often disapprove but do nothing about it. No illness takes such an awesome toll As do those driving under the influence of alcohol. Drunks Are not always at fault but their intoxicated condition Means they arc often not Alert enough to avoid a collision. Statistics show that Highway mishaps account for More and More deaths every year. Many if not most Are the result of a Driver who has been tipping the Ole bottle. Those who have been drinking and climb behind the steering wheel suf Brownfield news and the Terry county Herald established july 29, 1904 Conti St j. While in Rohrl our Community he spoke to two civic clubs in addition to regular Church meetings during the week. He literally fell in love with Brownfield and said unequivocally it was one of the friendliest communities he has Ever visited. What a Lovely compliment for Brownfield in one of his speeches to a civic club he talked about the Man who made himself a cripple. I his Man was born into a go xxx family he had been Well educated he had opportunities to make something out of himself but instead he turned to drugs and became crippled in body and mind. Who was to be blamed Quot Rex asked. Should the blame rest upon his parents not if they did everything they could to bring him up in the right Way of life. Perhaps the College he attended should be blamed. But when you consider that Over 95 per cent who attended the school turned out to be above average students you would wonder Why the institution should be blamed. Five years ago to Hickman Brownfield High physic Cal education teacher and Eloise Moore tied for the first Day of play in the perhaps the Church he attended should Bear the fault of the Young Many a departure from a Normal pathway of life. Yet most churches one is aware of encourages moral living on the part of its members. Who should be blamed Well Why not say the Young Man who either failed or refused to like advantage of a Good Home background school or Church education. Saul the first King of Israel disobeyed the commandment of god on occasion. Samuel the Prophet of god came unto him and questioned him concerning his direct disobedience unto adj a a commandment. Saul started rationalizing and offering his defense. Among other things he argued a but the people took of the i Samuel 15 21. He was actually saving a my mistake Wasny to my fault blame it on the Samuel continued to press Home the lesson that Saul had no one to blame but himself. After a while you then read these startling words Quot i have sinned for i have transgressed the commandment of Jehovah and thy words because i feared a people and obeyed their i Samuel 15 24. In Light of this confession Saul finally realized that As an individual he had some definite and personal responsibilities that no one could assume for him. So it is with us today. We either assume our personal responsibilities and on ligation or we could Well end up in life As hopeless cripples and the blame would have to be placed right where it would belong on self priorities of citizens concern. By Jimmy r. Allen Allen americans yawned their Way through a telethon appealing for funds to pay off a political party a debts. They were told that they needed to save the two party system. What was said May Well have been True. The response was about five million dollars. A goal of nine million had been set. More recently the Jerry Lewis telethon for muscular dystrophy sought to reach Over eight million dollars. Americans responded with nine million two Hundred thousand dollars voluntarily Given. While some would say the difference was simply in the emotional Appeal of children stricken with dread disease there is a deeper lesson to be Learned. Americans Are far More interested in saving lives than in saving a political party. They Are also far More interested in saving lives than in destroy ing them. Yet our National budget priorities do not reflect this commitment to human need on the part of americans citizens. Benno Schmidt chairman of the National panel of consultants on cancer the Good Earth revealed in a recent commencement address at new York medical College that a for every Man woman and child in the United states we spent in 1969 $410 on National defense $125 on the War in Viet Nam $19 on space programs $19 in foreign Aid and Only eighty nine cents on cancer Parade August 20,1972 this is True in spite of the fact that a of the More than two Hun dred million americans alive today fifty million will develop cancer and thirty four million will die of this painful and ugly disease if better methods of prevention and treatment arc not it looks As if our Public Money is not reflecting our individual concerns. Americans care. There was a Stream of Christian compassion running deep in the american soul. It is reflected whenever an Appeal is personalized in terms of human need. This compassion is not being reflected by our Public decision makers. The answer in this political year is to express that opinion in every Way possible. Christians should Lead the Way in communicating our concern for turning our resources toward human need. Leading the Way Means individual in a to citation in meeting need. We should remind our society that the cry of a child should still be heeded by a compassionate and powerful people.
