Seven Yoakum County families petition Brownfield Independent School District to redraw the western boundary to Terry County. Trustees meet Monday to consider the plan which could push students to Plains and cost up to 250000 in tax revenue. The district also weighs a metal building for pre kindergarten space and hiring another pre K teacher.
Brownfield trustees will discuss adopting a new school policy on AIDS and other communicable diseases at Monday evening meeting. Superintendent Don Hendley said the administration recently received a policy from the Texas Association of School Boards and will review it.
Eric Umbreil a chemical company salesman calls Terry County Farm Tour the best he has seen in a four state area. About 300 attendees boarded six buses from the First Baptist Church parking lot to learn this year’s county agriculture updates. The event ran alongside an Oil Tour to Wellman to view Union Texas Petroleum operations, the county’s largest oil producer and tax payer. 1987 farming award winners were announced: Outstanding Farm Family Bobby Moss family of Union. Dryland Farmer Burris family. Outstanding Young Farmer Randy Simpson. and Outstanding Agribusinessman Speedy Lindsey of Sonny’s Feed. The Moss family, new Dryland award recipients, operate cotton, maize, and wheat with limited irrigation and a stocker operation to supplement income. Fifty dollar Soil Conservation Service and Brownfield Chamber awards accompanied their plaque.
Brownfield City Council postpones choosing a new District One member to the first October meeting due to absences. Two district residents were named as potential appointees to fill the unexpired term of Francisco R. Grimaldo who resigned after moving from the district. Phillip Salas and former member Billy Dobson were discussed as candidates, with Salas planning to run if appointed. The appointee must reside in District One and join the Texas Municipal League trip to Fort Worth in October for training. The council also approved the South Plains Health District budget contribution of 26 421 dollars, matching last year with a 3 795 increase for new medical liability insurance.
An afternoon oil industry spotlight sponsored by the Chamber featured a bus tour to Union Texas where Gary Hendricks explained the CO2 plant near Wellman in operation for nine years. He noted wells in the Wolfcamp Limestone formation and listed Amoco Mobil Sun and Sohio as other Wellman field interests.
