Twelve Brownfield merchants met County Attorney Monroe Clayton to determine emergency sale allowances and how Saturday and Sunday laws apply. Clayton said rulings are unsettled with no court decisions yet. Merchants planned to await Austin guidance before further action.
Delegates from the 28th senatorial district including 11 counties gathered in El Paso and Fort Worth for state Democratic and Republican conventions. Brownfield’s Mrs. Howard Hurd was elected district committeewoman and Travis Shelton of Lubbock won renomination as committeeman. Brownfield and Terry residents planned to attend a Connally appearance in Lamesa and a major Demo rally at Fair Park Coliseum in Lubbock, while Jim Evans of Brownfield secured GOP credentials committee support and Jack Christie of Brownfield pursued the state senate nomination at Fort Worth.
Cities Service reports a Fusselman find in Terry County yielding 458 barrels of 36.2 gravity oil daily from a depth of 11 521 feet. The No 1 Lindsley discovery sits 23 miles southwest of Lubbock on a contiguous block wholly owned by Cities Service. The well flowed at 458 barrels per day with a 26/64 inch choke, tubing pressure 190 pounds, shut-in 900 pounds, gas oil ratio 100 to 1. Nearby Fusselman production lies about 35 miles south in Southeast Good Field, Borden County. West Texas’ latest find lies near Section 45, Block G, L&RR survey.
Wendell Newman of Brownfield and Miss Anne Weaver of Houston inaugurated Texas Tech's new residence hall telephone system. Weaver switched on 2200 phones, and Newman made the first call to Tech President R C Godwin thanking him for the service that includes a phone in every dormitory room. The system is among the first of its kind on US campuses.
City and county law enforcement officers arrested eight persons during a relatively quiet weekend. Antonio Hernandez, 34, jailed on drunkenness charge after his tractor collided with a fire plug damaging steering gear. Bobby Jack Nichols, 17, freed on bond for theft and paid fines for speeding and failure to appear. Johnny Lynch reported theft of tire wheel and hubcap from a 1960 Rambler wagon. Mrs J H Harris said an out of town couple rented a room and stole a revolver.
Richard Prigmore was installed as president of the Brownfield Boys Club for 1962 63, succeeding Monroe Clayton who served 18 months. Clayton becomes treasurer. Charles Darwin is first vice president. Rev Ralph O Dell is second vice president. Mrs Joe Henson serves as secretary. Clayton praised the club’s progress and urged public support as the club opens to the public.

The Brownfield school board approved departmentalization of curricula and backed administration in expelling two seniors for being at a function with beer on their breath. They reviewed testing schedules for Wheatley and planned integration timing after counseling and IQ testing.
The Rev. Ed Crow, pastor of the First Baptist Church, is invited to preach in a national evangelistic crusade in Japan during spring 1963. The Japan Baptist Convention and Baptist General Convention of Texas released the names of 147 evangelists, with Billy Graham among major speakers, to conduct about 150 revivals across 145 Japanese cities over a month long campaign.
The Terry County Farm Bureau led a groundbreaking ceremony for the County Agriculture Center in the 200 block of E Hill with mayor Jess McWherter and many officials turning the first dirt. Speakers praised the project as a united effort of agricultural agencies and local groups, noting the building will house all agencies and include an absent Farm Home Administration representative.
A Texas Employment Commission bulletin notes little progress in cotton picking due to slow field drying after heavy rains. By Thursday and Friday workers returned across active areas, with statewide need for 13,832 harvest hands. Lamesa reports strong migrant movement while most early cotton remains hand-picked in dryland regions.
