City to install large diesel generator at power plant
Major Improvements Program moves ahead with plans to install a Nordberg 10 cylinder 4 950 horsepower diesel at City Power and Light Plant. Panhandle Construction Co of Lubbock won a 29 457 contract for engine foundation basement room blower building and cooling tower base after bids from five other Lubbock firms. Completion date is May 10 as part of a 680 000 improvement program approved by voters last March. Other items include 1960 tax roll approval and travel plans for Texas Municipal League Conference in Galveston. Police and animal warden reports for August noted 343 calls and 54 arrests. Water pumpage figures show a five year trend.

Turner, nephew of a Brownfield area resident, earned his Hall of Fame niche as Hardin-Simmons center from 1937 to 1939. He is one of two Texans honored, alongside Charles Aldrich of TCU. R I Oliver Sam of Terry, born Wise County, raised there, WWII veteran and Church of Christ member, wins Terry Soil Conservation District and Chamber plaque with a $500 check as the year’s most diversified farmer. He began diversification in 1950 with native grass, faced 1953 54 drought, used deep plowing water management crop residues and fertilizer, signed 1958 Great Plains program, installed 3270 feet of underground pipeline, owns 320 acres plus 30 leased, and helps neighbors with conservation plans.
