Fifteen Brownfield business firms sponsor the ninth NEWS football contest with a total of 35 in weekly prizes. The paper will also give two tickets to every Texas Tech home game. Entry blanks should be deposited at sponsor locations.
The first ever hairstyling contest in Brownfield will be held September 20 at The Party House. Ten operators are entered from local salons. Sponsored by Brownfield Unit 101, Texas Association of Accredited Beauty Culturists, the event includes a 2 pm public portion with judging and a comb-out show. Prizes total about $300 plus trophies and an engraved plaque. Admission is $1.50. Local beauticians and officers are listed as participants and sponsors.
Brownfield American Legion Post 269 welcomed five state leaders from 11 Texas cities for a Thursday night program focused on a membership drive and Legion duties. Speakers included Don Peters, G Ward Moody, Maurice Cubby, Fred Brookman, and Raymond Andrews with remarks on constitutional heritage and public service.
Officers of the Terry County division of the White House Conference on Children and Youth elected at the organizational meeting plan a county wide study. committees cover juvenile delinquency education health welfare values youth participation public relations and finance with final arrangements at 4 p.m. Sept. 24.
Farmers from nine Terry County communities elected ASC committee men for the 1960 program year from a slate of 10 nominees in each community. At 10 a m Sept 25 the nine chairmen will meet at the ASC office 120 North Fifth to elect the Terry County ASC Committee comprising three members and two alternates.
Two Brownfield builders Glenwood Homes Inc and Butler McKinney Contractors stage open houses as National Home Week runs Sept 12 to 20. Glenwood hosts a model at 807 South Sons from 1 to 9 p m today and daily next week.
Meadow Broncos dominated Lorenzo Hornet 48 to 20 as Don Warren led with 22 points and James Bartlett added 16. Joe Horton passed and ran, with five Meadow players scoring and 432 total yards to Lorenzo’s 339. Warren scored early and extra points sealed the win.
Grady Davis was named the Most Diversified Farmer in Terry County for 1959 during the Terry Soil Conservation District sixth Field Day on Route 5 near Brownfield. The award came with 500 dollars and a plaque on the Davis farm, witnessed by his wife and two children. Bruce C. Zorns chaired the TSCD board and Brownfield Chamber of Commerce president. 506 Tourists joined a fried fish lunch at Coleman Park amid a record Field Day Tour.
The mother of Brownfield radio station owner Mike Barrett died Thursday in Lamesa at age 83. Beulah Barrett, a Dawson County resident for 48 years, passed away at a daughter’s home after months of illness. Funeral services were held Friday at Lamesa First Baptist Church with Rev. Milo B. Arbuckle officiating. Burial followed in Lamesa Cemetery. Survivors include son Ray Barrett of San Angelo, daughter Mrs. J. R. Farley of Temple, four sisters, two brothers, and 14 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren.
Grady Davis of Route 5 received the Diversified Farmer award for 1959 as Terry County’s largest crowd enjoyed the sixth Field Day program. The event drew visitors from many towns, featured over eight air conditioned buses, and included representatives from Texas A&M and Texas Tech. The tour highlighted Terry’s strong grain and cotton prospects amid a dry spell, with plans announced for a 1960 program and a ceremony at Davis’s farm.
The Brownfield News-Herald earned first place statewide in the Texas Press Association contest for best advertising campaign of 1959. The winning 13 ads for Goodpasture Grain & Milling Co. were titled The Good Earth. Weldon Callaway and Joe Ed Boatright accepted with their spouses at the TPA convention in the Commodore Perry Hotel.
Brownfield merchants plan a week long event September 21 to 26 offering special values as a royal salute to shoppers in the Brownfield trading area. Jim Hestand chairs the committee with members Jim Bayless Myron Fenton Royce Hardy Robert Knight Jerry Goble Charlie Price Curtis Sterling Harold Klein Bob Clements Jack Canipe and Mike Barrett.
