Farm tour route outlined for Thursday in Terry County

Duane Moss of the soil conservation service announced the final farm tour route for Thursday September 16 starting at 9 a.m. Six buses will depart from the Terry County courthouse square carrying more than 250 people to Challis Baptist Church Johnson community and Foster Community, ending at Coleman Park for a free barbecue lunch. Each bus will have a narrator and several farm homes and crops will be viewed including cotton grain sorghum watermelons and cantaloupes. Wives are welcome and the tour will feature more narration and one midway stop with refreshments by the Terry County Young Farmers.

Boll Worms Threaten Cotton Crop Says County Agent

County agent James Foy warned farmers that boll worms are rapidly increasing and pose a real threat to this year’s cotton crop. He noted unusually high numbers in September and that worms were found in every third or fourth blossom he inspected. Foy urged farmers to pick up a cotton guide at the County Agent’s office.

The Brownfield Nursing Home on First Street hosts a Thursday visit by the First Baptist Choir as residents and visitors share moments of coping and connection. Mrs. Sarah Jenkins, a three year seven month resident paralyzed by injuries, remains cheerful as she endures therapy and companionship.

Clyde McCullough Returns as Police Officer

Clyde L. McCullough, 36, of Brownfield now at 317 W Buckley, is appointed to the police department per Chief James E. Tippit. McCullough previously served from October 1968 to November 1969 and is welcomed back as a former fine officer.

Robberies and minor accidents plague town last week

Police faced petty thefts and noisy mischief as shoppers battled frantic bargains in the market. Two auto mishaps involved Patsy Nicholson in a 1967 Opel Kadett and Claudia Ray in a 1964 Ford. Guadalupe Chavez in a 1968 Chevrolet and Linda Pair in a 1971 Toyota were also noted in separate crashes. A caller reported boys drinking gasoline and causing a disturbance.

Fulford Named to National Cotton Advisory Committee

W A Fulford a Brownfield farmer and Brownfield Booster Club president is named to the National Cotton Advisory Committee one of eight Texans chosen to advise on the 1972 cotton program. He will attend a Washington meeting this month with fundraising efforts underway in Brownfield to support the effort.

Mexican Independence Day Fiesta Planned in Brownfield

Brownfield hosts a Mexican Independence Day celebration on Thursday Sept 16 beginning at 4 p.m. with a parade of floats followed by a 6 p.m. mass at St. Anthony's Catholic Church. A 7 p.m. dance display and social hall reception with food occur, crowned at 10 p.m., with speeches on Mexican American heritage at 11 p.m. Local organizers include Jesse Lozada Domingo Madrigal and Sonny Martinez with G I Forum and LACIO Club.
