Commissioners Set Tax Rate For 1983 At 20

Terry County commissioners set the 1983 county tax rate at 20 cents per $100 valuation in a special session. Based on a county property value of 1,272,376,950 the levy is projected at 2,544,753. The budget is being finalized with a September budget hearing planned. Tax notices go out October 1 and taxes are due January 31, 1983 to avoid penalties. The effective rate for last year was 19.4 cents. A rate above 20 cents would trigger public hearings if the levy rose more than three percent.

Reward Offered for Information in 1982 Scott Raney Burglary

Brownfield Crime Information Inc offers 300 reward for information leading to arrest and indictment of suspects in the August 26 1982 Scott Raney residence burglary. Items stolen include 5 Audio Vox Radios at about 300 each a digital clock auto channel selector and a cassette player.

Brownfield Council Grants Chief Authority on School Loading Zones

Brownfield City Council approved Police Chief J T Churchwell designating areas around Colonial Heights Elementary as passenger loading zones. Principal Fred Cawthon cited morning congestion on Fir Street from 7 55 to 8 30 as parents park along the curb. The council passed the resolution after noting no authority previously to move vehicles.

Red Coats Red Skirts Sponsor City Blood Drive

The Brownfield Chamber of Commerce and United Blood Services sponsor a all day blood drive on Tuesday at Century 21 offices in downtown Brownfield. Donors are urged as local usage climbs with Brownfield Regional Medical Center reporting 182 units used through July and past drives averaging low donations.

Nominations for four agricultural awards exceed recent years as about 35 entries arrive for the 1982 Terry County Farm Tour awards to be presented after the tour on September 16. District Conservationist Dwayne Moss notes the rise and previews stops in the northwest part of the county with crops like maize, guar and peas amid recent weather damage.

Brownfield Chamber Plans Voter Drive and Highway Funds Push

During a Wednesday session the Brownfield Chamber of Commerce outlined a voter registration drive running through Oct 3 and sending a resolution to state officials urging more highway funding. The meeting also covered a Red Coat blood drive and noted local school Labor Day closings.

Bearden Named Plains Postmaster

Melba M. Bearden has been appointed post master at Plains effective Saturday. A Plains Post Office clerk for 16 years she is Plains High School graduate and completed a postal course for second class office. She holds a special achievement award. Her husband T J Bearden is a local farmer and they have a daughter and son in Plains.
