Chamber Greeted By Full Agenda Emergency Loans For 1965 Crops

Local leaders in Terry County secured emergency operating loans for the 1964 crop year through FHA, aided by the Brownfield Chamber and banks. Officials say drought reduced cotton and mile production, threatening incomes for about 600 of 850 farmers. Agencies and groups joined to designate the county an emergency loan area to avert hardship.

Sidewalk Sale Idea Gathers Support In Brownfield Chamber

A Brownfield Chamber of Commerce session weighed a sidewalk sale proposed for September 28. End Of Month Report From Terry County Sheriff

The August report lists 17 male and four female arrests. Five liquor law violations dominate, with three drunkenness and weapons offenses, plus two burglary, two forgery, one murder, one theft over 50 dollars, one DWI, and four miscellaneous offenses.

County School Enrollment Figures Reported Up

The Brownfield area school systems enrolled all 3 700 students on Monday opening day. Brown School System registered 164 at Meadow 401 and Welk 254. Four of seven systems show increases over last year. Brown High School enrolled 668 students on opening day, up from 668 last year.

County School Enrollment Rises Across District

First day enrollment figures show gains at several elementary schools led by Randal Wheatley and Colonial Heights while Wellman and Meadow report mixed results. Brownfield expects about 3,050 students by mid November. total district enrollment stands at 2,881 this year, up 68 from last year.

Americanism Program Delights Brownfield Kiwanis Club

Brownfield Kiwanis heard three local high school students Linda Horton Janie Golden and Mike Paddock speak on Americanism. Terry County Farm Bureau sponsored their trip to a Huntsville seminar at Sam Houston State College with Delton Tatum presenting them. Nineteen members attended under President J C Dorsett and Cub cushions ordered for sale were not yet received.

Bush to Visit Brownfield for Campaign Events

Republican candidate George Bush will be in Brownfield Tuesday after noon September 8. He will appear on Courthouse Square from 4 30 to 5 00 then move to the Party House for a 5 00 to 6 00 gathering inviting all to meet the candidate.

Two Injured In Accidents This Morning

Two morning accidents in Brownfield left two people injured. Charles Lee Lasiter, 29, suffered multiple injuries from a single vehicle crash on US 380 west of Brownfield, was treated at Brownfield General Hospital. Nathan Doug Chesshir, 15, injured after his scooter collided with a Buick at Hester and Pine Streets, received treatment for a broken right thumb.

Teachers Library Extends Special Services in Terry County

Clarence Clark Produces Terry County’s First 1964 Cotton Bale

Clarence Clark, farming 17 miles south of Brownfield, produced Terry County’s first bale of cotton for 1964. The 555 pound bale came from about eight acres on W. H. Wagner’s semi irrigated land, ginned at North Gin, Inc. and displayed on the courthouse square.

So Near And Yet So Far In Terry County Cotton Bale Race

The near miss came at Brownfield Co-op Gin when Clarence Clark’s first bale rolled out earlier Tuesday. L M Williams of Meadow owned the near miss bale and harvested from his Union farm. The 585 pound bale edged the tally as the second, with Dale Fulford’s third bale reported at Meadow’s Cotton Producers Gin around 4 PM yesterday.

Delineation Hearing On Subdivision Four Boundaries

About 50 people attended a 9 am public hearing at Brownfield High School Auditorium to decide if the boundaries of Subdivision No. 4 of the underground reservoir south of the Canadian River should be changed. Texas Water Commission commissioners H A Beck and Otha Dent heard testimony with examiner Jim Adams presiding. Rites Held For Norman Steen

Putteral services for Norman Steen former Brownfield resident were held at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Gardens Home Funeral Home Amarillo. Steen a building contractor died from an accidental gunshot wound in the head after a family move preparation between Canyon and Amarillo. He was born in Wilson Lynn County and moved to Brownfield as a youth. Survivors include his wife two sons and two daughters all at home in Amarillo four sisters and five brothers.

Miss Weiss speaks at Jaycees luncheon

Jane Weiss Miss South Plains title winner addressed the Junior Chamber of Commerce during the weekly luncheon. President Mark Wyatt led the meeting as Jerry Goble announced a Jaycees staffed rest stop on the Levelland Vy will operate 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Labor Day with coffee and donuts for travelers.
