Harvest Festival Talent Show Draws Large Crowd

Brownfield's 1982 Harvest Festival opened with a 90 minute talent show at the Middle School Auditorium. Five candidates competed for the Harvest Festival Queen title, each performing solo and introduced by Crandall Young and Don Hendley. Miss Denise Willis performed a skit and song, while the five contestants showcased western outfits and song and dance numbers. The Queen was to be named Saturday evening at Coleman Park.

Brownfield To Keep Canadian River Water Allocation

Brownfield will receive 80 percent of its usual Canadian River water share, matching the level of the past two years. City Manager Jake Geron said the 590.166 million gallons per year demand from 1981 and 1982 is excessive for Brownfield facilities. Absentee voting continues with a 5 p.m. Oct 29 cutoff in Terry County.

Cavazos Convicted in Aggravated Assault Case

A Terry County jury of six men and six women found Jose M. Cavazos Sr. guilty of aggravated assault in a May 2, 1982 incident involving Brownfield Officer Harold Snell. Trial in the 121st District Court before Judge Ray Anderson lasted about 1 hour 53 minutes. sentencing is set for 11 a.m. Nov. 9.

Farmers Await Freeze Before Stripping Cotton

Brownfield News spoke with District Conservationist Duane Moss about Terry County cotton during a late season. He noted little to no defoliation yet due to green bolls and expected frost before significant harvest actions. He warned rain stress may open bolls early and degrade fiber while maize harvest continues.

Keesee Elected To Third Term As SWCD Director

Bill Keesee was elected to a third term as a Terry County Soil and Water Conservation District director at the annual election held in Energas Flame Room. He represents the district’s northeast section near Meadow and joins four other directors including R D Jones Jr., Jesse Hartman, Herman Wheatley Jr., and Robert Luker. The Terry SWCD promotes soil and water conservation and coordinates efforts of local state and federal agencies. The Meadow High School Council hosts a blood drive in the school auditorium from 8:30 a.m. to noon Monday, conducted by United Blood Services.

Amendments Reviewed For Texas Voters In Ballot
