John H Stock ton Jr county executive director of ASCS says grain sorghum loans are available in the county office for 1971 Feed Grain program participants. The 1971 loan rate is 1 74 per cwt for No 2 grain or better. REAP funds cover 1971 practices and deep plowing funds may be used on cotton and grain sorghum land to prevent wind erosion with land eligibility now including all land. The county committee increases the cost share limit to 1000 and changes in farming operations should be reported to ASCS. Farmers will receive an SRS questionnaire in the mail and should return it to Austin.
The Sheriff's Office reports holiday active crackdown with courthouse closures noted. Several individuals faced petty to multiple charges including driving while intoxicated, driving on the wrong side, and possession of drugs, with fines ranging from 17.50 to 147.30 and various jail or bond statuses.
The Cotton Boosters of Terry County host a reception and cotton display at 7:30 p.m. Saturday December 4 at the Selena Jane Brown Field Clubhouse honoring Sandra Bielss Miss Cotton of West Texas 1971. Admission is $1.00 per person. Debbie Caswell first runner up of Terry County and other guests attend.
Six criminal cases were disposed of in the 121st Judicial District Court in Brownfield last week. Judge M C Ledbetter presided. Santos Pena pleaded guilty to destruction of property and received a three year probated sentence. Randal Ray Rodgers and David Beesinger pleaded guilty to possession of a narcotic drug and received five years probation. Kenneth Musick was found not guilty of joyriding by jury. Eddie Lee Jones was tried by jury for theft and found not guilty. Olen Doyle Dodson referenced in the criminal section.
The Third Southwest Pork Symposium will be held December 6 in Canyon with carcass evaluation followed by talks on health nutrition and economic aspects of swine production. Texas Agricultural Extension Service and West Texas State University School of Agriculture sponsor. Registration 8 a.m. on site evaluations at 8:30.
The South Plains harvest moves forward as strippers work in dew and fog delays fade. Ginners run full day shifts while trailers and weather influence pace. cotton grades improve with longer staple promising better prices, though total bales lag earlier forecasts due to weather and hail damage. Wheat grazing and cover crops follow, with deep plowing and land kept ready for next season.
Thanksgiving patrols kept the Police Department busy as officers chased six dogs through 10th Street and a gravel pit. A resident’s chained hound drew attention while local youths disturbed a dog. Reports included a suspected prowler, a drunken pedestrian, two near wrecks, and boys damaging Christmas lights. One dog was run over.
Carl Johnson, an employee of Goodpasture Chemical on the Seagraves Highway, fell about 20 to 25 feet Thursday into an acid tank. A rescue squad took him to Brownfield General Hospital where surgery followed. Doctors described his condition as fair on Friday afternoon, noting he did not suffer burns because the acid remained in the tank.
